Every year April 2nd marks a landmark for the ‘Hole in the Wall Curtains’ team, as 8 years ago to the day a huge fire threatened our stores continued existence.
Events of the blaze were covered by newspaper reporters and televisions crews from across theMidlands, making the story big local news. The following BBC report taken at the time of the fire helps describe the severity of the situation:
“More than 80 firefighters have been tackling a serious fire at a fabric shop in Walsall. They were called to the Hole in the Wall store on Friday 2nd April 2004 at around 04:00BST.
Firefighters are still at the scene and the building has been declared “totally unsafe.”
Traders on Walsall’s High Street have been told they would not be able to return to work over the weekend because of the damage caused.
Station Commander John Rees said it was too early to say how the fire started.
Part of Walsall town centre is expected to remain closed to traffic over the weekend following a blaze yesterday which caused an estimated 1 million pounds of damage.”
However, we don’t give up that easily, so after spending several weeks working tirelessly to replace smoke and water damaged stock the ‘Hole in the Wall Curtains’ team reopened it’s doors welcoming back our customers!
